Marriage: The Hand Writing on the Wall

Don't Overlook Your Spouse!

Happy Thursday! Welcome to this week’s Elevate Your Marriage newsletter, where every week I share a marriage(or principle) of the Bible to encourage couples to grow their marriage in Christ.

It’s a common phrase of impending doom that surely you’ve heard or likely have used before. But did you know the phrase, “The Handwriting is on the Wall”, comes from a scene in Daniel 5 - in the Bible?

Today from that familiar phrase I want to share 1 key observation that has blessed my own marriage for years: Don't overlook your husband or your wife.

Read all Daniel 5, but here is a summary: Pagan King Belshazzar had a feast for 1,000 servants, they drank a lot of wine and praised many made up gods. During the feast the king saw a hand writing on the wall. ✍🏼

Of course that scared him. So, he promised a purple coat, gold chain and to be 3rd ruler of the kingdom to whoever read & interpret what the hand was writing. ✍🏼

Here’s the point, none of the kings “wise men” - astrologers, enchanters, magicians - none of ‘em, could interpret the words nor meaning of the hand writing on the wall. That right there’s the point that has blessed me and my marriage…

King Belshazzar was willing to give up a purple robe, a gold chain and most important, 1/3 of his kingdom to find information that: 🥁🥁🥁his wife had all the time.

Belshazzar this pagan king, causes me to look at my own self and wonder, how many times and even more so how much time and energy have I spent looking for answers and solutions when God had deposited what I needed in the wife - right there with me. In trying to make sense of what doesn’t make sense - don’t overlook the husband or wife you already have.

As the king focussed on the experts, his wife came in the banquet hall and pointed him toward Daniel, God’s man that could interpret the hand writing on the wall.

Again, please read all Daniel 5, and what Daniel did to get the whole story. But don’t miss Belshazzar looked all over the place for solutions when his wife had the answer…

Let’s make that a matter of prayer: Have I gotten so comfortable and landed on my own rigid conclusions about my spouse that I am or have missed God’s blessing that He’s deposited in my spouse…

how much time and energy have I spent looking for answers and solutions when God had deposited what I needed in the wife - right there with me.
