028 Likewise:You Husbands and Wives

1 Peter 3:1-7 gives husbands & wives clear direction on their role in marriage. The 1st 6 verses lay out how wives win their husband with character more than their words. Verse 7 explains how husbands prayers are hindered by not showing compassion & honoring their wife.

From engaged to long married couples trying to determine the way forward in a difficult marriage, I’ve watched couples gain wisdom and God’s clarity from 1 Peter 3. In my attempted humorous way I like to point out 1 Peter 3 comes after 1 Peter 2 (Yes. Profound 😄)

Whether you laugh at that or not, point is, the 1 Peter 3 truths to wives and husbands follow 1 Peter 2. Check it out:

1. 1 Peter 2:21 - For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.

2. 1 Peter 2:22 & 23 - He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. Instead, Jesus continually (entrusted) turned Himself over to God the Father - “Him who judges justly”, because people don’t always treat us right, but God does.

3. 1 Peter 2:24 - He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. Read 3 times: You have been healed 

4. 1 Peter 2:25 - For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.

Christ, our example, models a life lived and turned over to God the Father, the One that judges justly, when He was hated and caused to suffer. I think how I respond when I’m mistreated. How would I’ve responded if rocks were being thrown at me or I was being spit upon 😳

Whatever flashed in your mind…Thank the Lord, Jesus responded by rising above the people by turning Himself over to God the Father. If not, there’d be no Cross, no salvation for us, we’d be hopeless and without path to the Shepherd and Guardian of our soul…

Peter continues his letter in 1 Peter 3, with shift from all Christians to a specific nod to married Christians:

Likewise, wives…1 Peter 3:1

Likewise, husbands…1 Peter 3:7

Q: “Likewise” as what/who? A: Jesus

Marriage is tough. Jesus is the model. With God’s wisdom, follow Christ’s example focussed on the mission and direction of God the Father for your marriage. Likewise wives. Likewise husbands.
