021 Boaz and Ruth: The Legacy of Your Marriage

3 minute read that will bless your marriage all week long

Hey, It’s Edward from Elevate Your Marriage. I pray all have had and are having a great week. I have a special request before jumping into this week’s newsletter.

Over the last month, I have been overwhelmed by your support of this newsletter! For each of the last 3 weeks more than 60% of our subscribers have opened and then I presume, read the newsletter. That’s amazing! Just for context, 40-50% would be great so +60% opening/reading the email is just amazing. The +60% suggests you might be getting something out of the newsletter, worth opening {Share newsletter feedback on social media posts - it really helps}.

Please help me improve the content and focus of the newsletter to make it even better for more and more couples. Here’s how: There are 2 short 1 question polls in today’s newsletter {each taking no more than 10 seconds} please complete at least 1, if not both of them. That’s it - 10 seconds. Thanks in advance.

The Legacy of Your Marriage:

Now let’s get to this week’s topic: What legacy will your marriage leave to your kids, future generations of your family, friends and even strangers you don’t know or may never meet?

Will your marriage legacy be positive and encourage more to follow Christ in their marriage? Again, think first of those closest, the kids watching, the other family members…then think of strangers that see you and your spouse. What do they see? Does it represent Christ. Most importantly, what does God see - is it pleasing to Christ.

We get a good picture of a godly legacy from the marriage of Boaz and Ruth. Like all the marriage’s of the Bible, there are some big cultural differences, yet the marriage couples of the Bible remind us (1) much of what we experience in marriage today has been happening since the beginning of time (2) God has been leading in, out and through marital challenges since the beginning of time!

Boaz and Ruth are a well regarded couple and often among single women you will hear mention of waiting on or finding their Boaz. What they mean is, a strong man, led by the Lord that’ll lead and love like Boaz did with Ruth.

In short: Ruth’s husband died during a time of famine but she remained faithful to her mother-in-law, Naomi. They came to Bethlehem during harvest time. That is where Ruth, a non-Jewish woman, and Boaz, a Jewish man, met and, through a process of faithfulness, they eventually married.

(Please take 30 minutes to read the Book of Ruth - it will bless you). Here is how the Book of Ruth ends {4:18-22}: Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez fathered Hezron, Hezron fathered Ram, Ram fathered Amminadab,Amminadab fathered Nahshon, Nahshon fathered Salmon,Salmon fathered Boaz, Boaz fathered Obed,Obed fathered Jesse, and Jesse fathered David.

There’s so so much about their relationship and eventual marriage that is valuable for couples today, but that ending really captures their whole story and just may create a new beginning for your marriage, because here is the point: The marriage of Boaz & Ruth left an enduring legacy, that continues to this very day.

After years of faithfulness and obedience to God, Boaz and Ruth became the great-great grandparents to David. As in the David of David and Goliath, as in David that wrote most of the Psalms, as in David through whom the Messiah, Christ would come from.

Wow, that is so significant. And it brings out a question to ask your own marriage, What good thing will start with us? Or if need be, what negative will end with us? Whatever needs to happen + or -, what legacy will your marriage leave…

  1. A God Start: Their story starts with death & loss but ends with generations of life. Through your marriage God can start change for future generations.

  2. Faithful Today: They didn’t try to write a perfect love story. Still, today, their love is mentioned, because they were faithful in & to their reality. From where you marriage is today, you can be a blessing to others.

  3. Beyond Today: Boaz and Ruth never met David or knew about the promises to come. Being faithful to God in marriage today, can bless your generations you’ll never see.

  4. Ends Here: Before Boaz and Ruth’s marriage the story was of death and sadness. Being faithful, patient and determined to do it God’s Way, they became an ending point of sadness in not only Naomi the mother-in-law’s life but the entire community.

  5. Connect to Christ: In the Matthew 1 lineage of Christ, Ruth is 1 of just 4 women mentioned in the line of Christ. Your marriage can align with the greater story of Christ!

Next: Read the Book of Ruth and begin discussing and praying how your marriage can leave a Christ Centered legacy for generations to come
